Netflix Implements New Policy to Restrict Password Sharing
You Won’t Be Able to Share Netflix from Now On!
Netflix recently announced a significant change to its account-sharing policy, which will impact users in India. The company will no longer allow people to share their Netflix accounts with individuals outside of their households. This development comes as part of Netflix’s efforts to combat password-sharing and ensure that each user has their own account. Let’s dive into the details.

Netflix’s decision to restrict password sharing outside of households was communicated to users via email. The company encourages users to keep their accounts exclusive to those they live with. As a result, users can still share their Netflix account with their parents, spouse, or other family members, even if they are not physically together.
The crackdown on password sharing began after Netflix observed a decline in its subscriber base. To address this issue, it conducted a test in Chile, Costa Rica, and Peru, and eventually expanded the initiative to include other regions such as the US and Canada. This new policy is now applicable globally, including India.
In order to attract more subscribers and discourage password sharing, Netflix has introduced additional features. For instance, users can now transfer profiles and manage logged-in devices. These features are aimed at promoting individual accounts and preventing unauthorized access.
While some regions have introduced an add-on plan that allows others to pay extra to continue using a shared account, this option will not be available in India. Netflix’s shareholders’ letter explains this decision, stating, “In these markets, we’re not offering an extra member option given that we’ve recently cut prices in a good number of these countries (for example, Indonesia, Croatia, Kenya, and India) and penetration is still relatively low in many of them so we have plenty of runway without creating additional complexity. Households borrowing Netflix will be able to transfer existing profiles to new and existing accounts.“
Although this change may negatively impact users in India, Netflix has witnessed growth in both revenue and subscriber numbers. Only time will tell how this new policy will affect Netflix’s future in the country. Stay tuned as we continue to monitor the situation.
